Revisiting the Astros' Bizarre 6-Man No-Hitter at Yankee Stadium on its 17th Anniversary
By Nick Porr
It feels like it's been a century since the Houston Astros wore red and black, played in the National League, and weren't universally hated. But 17 years ago on this day, the old-school Astros beat the New York Yankees in one of the strangest wins in MLB History.
At the time the game was a rare interleague matchup, with the Yankees were hosting the Astros at the old Yankee Stadium and future three time All-Star Roy Oswalt was on the mound for Houston. Oswalt's dominant start paved the way for a six-pitcher no-hitter, which made MLB history.
The Astros set a record for most pitchers in a no-hitter.
A groin injury ended up forcing Oswalt out of the game after just one inning pitched, which certainly made it seem like a lost contest with Houston having to go to the bullpen in the second inning. But that was far from the case. Five relievers came in, none of whom threw more than 2.2 innings, and the Astros' bats exploded for an 8-0 win.
Not only that, but it was the first no hitter thrown against the Yankees on their home field since 1952. What an overlooked moment in baseball history.
