Richard Sherman Reveals Surprising Benefit of Potential 49ers Home Games Outside California
By Scott Rogust
The NFL has been mighty confident in its abilities to start the 2020 regular season on time, but as we all know during this ongoing pandemic, the coronavirus will truly determine the timeline, not us. All the same, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell remains steadfast in his belief that football can be played on time, and he's not backing down.
However, California Governor Gavin Newsom has put the kibosh on fans attending San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams, and Los Angeles Chargers games in 2020 unless herd immunity is achieved or a vaccine is created. With that statement making waves, Pro Football Talk has suggested having the California teams play in states that will allow partial attendance in stadiums.
49ers cornerback Richard Sherman appears to be a fan of that idea. Why? Because he won't have to pay those high California tax rates!
You can't blame Sherman for liking that idea. Just about anyone would gladly pay lower taxes if the opportunity arose. That's like hitting the jackpot!
If California won't allow the 49ers to play their games in Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, fans or not, they could pivot to Arizona. Yes, they'd have to share State Farm Stadium with the NFC West rival Cardinals, but the scheduling works in their favor -- the two teams never have a home game on the same day.
Both have home games scheduled for Week 9, when the 49ers play on Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers and the Cardinals play the Miami Dolphins on Sunday afternoon. They're both scheduled for home contests in Week 13 as well, but with the Cardinals playing the Rams on Sunday and the 49ers facing the Buffalo Bills on Monday.
The potential is there for the 49ers to play in Arizona, and Sherman is all-in thanks to the tax benefits. That reasoning might not make the San Francisco overly excited, but such is life in this strange world we suddenly live in.
