Richard Sherman Rips Baker Mayfield for Refusing to Shake Hands With 49ers Players
By Karl Rasmussen
Baker Mayfield tried to make a bold statement ahead of the Browns' Monday Night Football clash with the 49ers, but unfortunately, it backfired. And miserably.
The Browns' QB refused to shake hands with the 49ers captains ahead of the pregame coin toss, and after his woeful performance on primetime, Mayfield got called out by one of his opponents.
Richard Sherman was asked about Mayfield's antics, and he did not hold back. "That's some college s***," said Sherman. It's ridiculous. We're all trying to get psyched up, but... that's NFL etiquette."
Well, Sherman's words weren't the only way he displayed his displeasure with the Browns' second-year QB. Mayfield's very first pass attempt of the game ended up being picked off by the veteran cornerback.
Not the best way to back up your pregame antics there, Baker.
And to make matters worse, Mayfield completed just 8-of-22 pass attempts for 100 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions in the 31-3 blowout loss.
Mayfield's polarizing personality can certainly rally his team, but when he takes things too far, he only stands to motivate his opponents.
This isn't the first time Mayfield has refused to partake in the pregame handshakes, having done so once in college against the Kansas Jayhawks, an act which drew ire from many.
Clearly he didn't learn from his past mistake, and after trying to set the tone against the Niners on Monday night, Mayfield ended up awakening a beast within his opponents.
