Richard Sherman Urges Players to Save Money and Warns of NFL Strike
By Scott Rogust
NFL fans have already seen a brief lockout back in 2011. Yet, they received good news on Wednesday, as the Washington Post reported that the NFL and NFLPA are making progress towards a new collective bargaining agreement.
However, a 17-game season is "increasingly likely" to be included in the new CBA.
San Francisco 49ers cornerback and NFLPA vice president Richard Sherman sent out a tweet later on in the night, urging players to save their money to better prepare themselves for a work stoppage once the current CBA expires. This is a bit concerning...
Earlier this year, the NFL and club owners pushed for an 18-game season in order to bring in more revenue. Yet, the NFLPA and its players were against the idea, given the physical toll the game has on the human body.
The NFL believes that reducing their ask from 18 games to 17 would make it more likely that players would agree to it. In fact, the aforementioned report indicates that owners are showing "willingness to make concessions" to get the NFLPA to agree to the deal.
A 17-game season could potentially feature a reduced preseason and an expanded postseason.
As Sherman's tweet indicates, an agreement might not necessarily happen, hence his plea to NFL athletes to have some money to fall back on in case they are to go on strike.
