Robbie Gould Calls Green Bay His 'Favorite Place' Amid Speculation About Future
By Scott Rogust
The deadline for NFL players to sign their franchise tag tenders arrives on July 15, and kicker Robbie Gould has been noncommittal with the San Francisco 49ers.
Back in April, Gould requested a trade from the 49ers, but the front office still has no desire to do so. With the franchise tag deadline approaching, the team may have no choice but to move him (if possible). Let's add to the speculation!
While speaking at a local Rotary Club event on Wednesday, Gould was asked about his "favorite place" to play, and the veteran kicker volunteered Green Bay.
"My favorite place is Green Bay," Gould said, via The Mercury News. "There's something to the history of going there, and walking through the single-file tunnel. I've played really well there. It's a comfort thing."
Does that mean Gould will end up on the Packers this year? No, not at all.
It's a tricky situation, as Gould could choose to hold out until Week 1, where he would earn all of his $4.97 million salary for the upcoming season. That, or he could choose to wait until Week 10, earning himself a prorated salary, or sit out the 2019 season entirely, a la Le'Veon Bell last year with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Gould was linked to returning to the Chicago Bears, given their woes in finding consistent kicking. However, the player himself denied it, saying he wanted to play somewhere closer to his family, who live in Illinois.
The 49ers and Gould have made no progress on a long-term deal, and if they don't by this upcoming Monday, a lengthy holdout could very well take place.
