Robbie Ray Leaves Diamondbacks-Rockies Game With Back Spasms
By Sean Facey
The Diamondbacks aren't taking any chances with their star pitcher.
Starter Robbie Ray was removed from Arizona's Wednesday afternoon game against the Colorado Rockies with a low back spasm.
The de facto ace of the starting staff in wake of the Zack Grienke trade, Ray lasted just two innings, allowing one hit, two walks and an earned run while striking out two batters.
He seemed to experience the discomfort while warming up ahead of the third inning. He can be seen turning toward the dugout after airmailing a practice pitch well beyond the reach of catcher Carson Kelly.
Ray has been a model of consistency for the Diamondbacks this year. Entering the day, he had posted a 3.99 ERA in 140 innings through 27 starts. He also entered play with 185 strikeouts, good for ninth-most among all qualified starters.
His steady performance this year drew plenty of interest at the trade deadline, but Arizona chose to keep him.
Ray still has another year of control left on his contract and figures to be a key part of Arizona's starting staff in 2020.
