Robel Garcia Promotion is the Exact Wake-up Call the Cubs Need
By Max Scoli
The Chicago Cubs have been struggling to put games in the win column as of late, dropping six of their last eight to fall back to second place in the NL Central in embarrassing fashion.
Team President Theo Epstein is not happy, and has threatened to make several moves if his organization doesn't pick up the pace, stating that “change is called for if we keep playing like this."
The first of these moves came today when the Cubs announced that they have calling up switch-hitting infielder Robel Garcia from Triple-A Iowa, and optioning right-hander Dillon Maples in a corresponding move.
Garcia has been phenomenal in the minors this season. Spending time with Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa before his promotion, Garcia posted an outstanding .285/.364/.594 stat line with 21 home runs, 14 doubles and a triple.
This transaction shows that Epstein means business, and nobody in the clubhouse is safe if they don't start winning baseball games. It took the Chicago Cubs over a century to return to MLB relevance, and Epstein is prepared to do everything in his power to make sure that things stay that way.
Cubs culture has changed. Losing is not an option anymore.
