Robert Quinn Flipping a Coin Between Bears and Falcons Says a Lot About Chicago
By Brady Williams
It says a lot, and none of it's good. The Chicago Bears' huge signing of Robert Quinn now has a stain of their own making all over it. Apparently, Quinn said it was a tossup to decide if he wanted to play for the Bears or the Falcons. Considering the Bears agreed to an enormous five-year, $70 million deal with the two-time Pro-Bowler, one would hope he'd have a little more enthusiasm for his new home.
To think that a deal of that size coupled with the opportunity to play on the same line as Khalil Mack with Akiem Hicks at linebacker wouldn't be enough to convince a player to turn down the Atlanta Falcons is, quite frankly, a pathetic look for Chicago.
It's a sad state of affairs when a franchise that's typically lauded for its defense can't convincingly bring in a guy like Quinn. In his mind, the Falcons, who allowed the 10th-most points in the league last year, were on essentially even footing with the Bears, who were the NFL's fourth-best in scoring defense in 2019. The Bears defense is great and is proven as a place in which a player can elevate his game, but things are so bad in Chicago that it just isn't overly appealing.
Hmmm. Sounds fishy.
The Bears' quarterbacking situation is a mess right now. Their offense can't generate any kind of momentum, and it's killing a team with a great foundation. With the coaching being nothing short of mercurial, it's hard to say what the identity and direction of that team is. It's shocking that one of the top defenses in the NFL contributed to merely an 8-8 season, but here we are. The Bears' inability to get it together ultimately didn't cost them Quinn, but who's to say what way the coin will fall next time they try to sign a star? The whole thing just feels wrong.
