Robinson Cano Once Again Headed to IL Makes Things Even Worse for Mets
By Brian Cass
New York Mets fans thought they were in for a good season heading into 2019. And while they're still not out of it for a Wild Card spot, they've had trouble finding consistency throughout the year.
After finalizing the blockbuster trade to bring Robinson Cano back to the Big Apple, fans were pumped. But, like the rest of the Mets ball club, Cano has had an up and down season, mostly due to his nagging injuries. And it appears that he'll be heading back on the IL this week.
This quad injury has been pestering Cano all year, as he's had numerous trips to the IL. This time around, it'll be a 10-day stint for the second baseman. It's his second time on the IL in three weeks with the same quad issue.
If the Mets want to make a playoff run this summer, it's imperative that Cano gets healthy and has a strong second half. The 36-year-old infielder is having one of the worst years of his career, posting a .238 batting average with just three home runs. If his .238 mark stays where it is currently, it'll be the worst BA of his career.
The Mets are currently six games out of first place in the NL East, trailing both the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies.
They still have a good chance at snagging a Wild Card spot, but if Cano continues to struggle with this ailment, the road to the playoffs will be all the more tougher for New York.
