VIDEO: Rockets GM Daryl Morey Calls Out NBA Announcers for Hating Modern Basketball
By Will Coleman
After trading big man Clint Capela to the Atlanta Hawks and converting to a small ball lineup, the Houston Rockets continue to find ways to win despite playing an unconventional style of basketball. If anything, Houston's strategy is reflective of where the NBA is headed: positionless basketball. Athletes throughout the league are becoming increasingly versatile in the positions they can both play and defend. Rockets GM Daryl Morey, however, thinks NBA broadcast personalities are against changes in the way the game is played, and are working to ruin the public's interest in the new, strange, 3-bombing edition of the sport.
When he joined the set of FS1's "First Things First" with Nick Wright on Tuesday, Morey was discussing reform within the NBA to increase its popularity before rambling about the general negativity he consistently hears throughout game broadcasts.
Morey didn't take any direct shots at specific announcers, but called them out as a whole for talking down on modern basketball and the importance of certain regular season games. In comparison to NFL telecasts and the enthusiasm that personalities like Tony Romo can bring to the booth, Morey and Wright agreed that NBA broadcasts aren't as exciting as they should be because of the announcers.
Morey is optimistic that NBA broadcasts will eventually change for the better, but for now. he's infuriated that announcers spend too much time critiquing the game and not enough time talking about the enthralling action on the court.
