Rockets Sign Veteran Center Tyson Chandler to a 1-Year Deal
By Michael Luciano
After their game-changing trade for Russell Westbrook, Daryl Morey and the Houston Rockets have continued to add pieces with the hopes of finally building a champion.
Veteran rim protector Tyson Chandler, who spent last season with the Los Angeles Lakers, has agreed to a one-year deal with Houston.
The former No. 2 overall pick is entering his 18th NBA season having averaged 3.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. The former All-Star and three-time All-Defense selection can still use his massively strong 7-1, 240-pound frame to battle down low for rebounds, contest shots, and do the dirty work in the post.
Besides Clint Capela, who has still not evolved his game past rim-running and dunking, the Rockets have limited size and low-post defense, which has killed them when the playoffs come around. Chandler finally gives them that bouncer that isn't afraid to tussle.
Even though he'll be 37 when the season starts, Chandler can make his presence known on the low block in important spurts. That checks another box for Houston as they pivot towards a hopeful 2019-20 campaign.
