Rodrigo Blankenship's Signing Bonus Isn't as Much as You Would Think
By Mark Powell
Rodrigo Blankenship with a chip on his shoulder? This guy knows no other way.
The former Georgia walk-on has been doubted yet again, this time by NFL scouts, all despite being named the Lou Groza award winner, which goes to the best kicker in college football.
Blankenship signed with the Colts as a UDFA after several teams opted for different special teams options in last weekend's NFL Draft. Such a move is nothing to scoff at, but his signing bonus ought to motivate him even more.
All things considered, Blankenship was signed into a pretty great situation for a UDFA. Indy's incumbent kicker is no longer on the roster, as arguably the best of all-time in 47-year-old Adam Vinatieri is coming off injury and a rough season in which he made just 17-of-25 kicks.
Assuming he can beat out Chase McLaughlin -- which we shouldn't doubt, given his previous achievements -- Blankenship would earn a stable roster spot starting for a team on the rise in the AFC South. What's not to love?
Oh, and did we mention he gets to kick in a dome?
We'll see you in a decade, Rodrigo. Keep those rec specs clean.
