Ron Rivera Just Confirmed How Badly the Redskins Blew Trent Willams Trade Discussions
By Adam Weinrib
New 49ers tackle Trent Williams' relationship with his former team evaporated bit by bit over the past year and change, for very legitimate reasons.
But it appears that, midway through last season, the Redskins still foolishly thought there was something to salvage.
New 'Skins head coach Ron Rivera confirmed recently the team was offered a first-round pick for Williams at 2019's deadline, but declined, assuming (for whatever reason) they could retain Williams or beat the offer.
During 2020's draft, Rivera's Redskins finally pulled the trigger, sending Williams to San Francisco for a fifth-rounder and 2021 third-rounder. Call us crazy (we're not crazy) but we prefer the first-round selection.
It's unfortunate Rivera had to be the one to go public with this confirmation, considering it's his mess to clean up, but not one of his own creation. That said, the Williams situation was beyond unsalvageable, and bait had to be cut at this point.
Hopefully, the 49ers treat him like the family member they claim him to be, and attend to his medical needs with thoroughness, instead of dismissiveness.
