Ron Roenicke to Be Named Red Sox Interim Manager After Alex Cora Firing
By Michael Luciano
The Boston Red Sox have finally added some stability to the manager position after a turbulent offseason pushed Alex Cora out of the door in the wake of his sign-stealing escapades.
But not that much stability.
Bench coach Ron Roenicke, who has been a coach in MLB for the better part of two decades, will be named the interim manager for the 2020 season, but won't attain a permanent title.
Roenicke had a seven-year pro career, mostly with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He made his name as a coach during his 10-year stint with the Los Angeles Angels as a bench coach and third base coach.
In 2011, he was named manager of the Milwaukee Brewers. He went 342-331 with Milwaukee, winning the NL Central in his first year in charge. He was fired in 2015 after a 7-18 start.
Cora brought the vet onto the Boston staff in 2018, where he won a championship as the Red Sox bench coach.
Roenicke appears to have gotten the short end of the stick during his time as Milwaukee's manager, given how he got them to the postseason, so elevating a manager of his quality who already has familiarity with the locker room looks like a pretty solid move from Boston.
Of course, this also means the Sox must be quite confident that the punishment en route for the 2018 campaign will not taint Roenicke's managerial status.
