Ronald Torreyes Reunites With Joe Girardi and Signs With Phillies
By Jerry Trotta
There is no doubting that Joe Girardi had a say in one of the Philadelphia Phillies' recent roster transactions.
On Tuesday, The Athletic reported that the Phils' signed catcher Christian Bethancourt and infielder Ronald Torreyes to minor league contracts.
The latter, of course, spent two seasons (2016 and 2017) under Girardi with the New York Yankees before he was traded to the Cubs during the 2018 offseason.
The 27-year-old Torreyes eventually landed on his feet in Minnesota, but only appeared in seven games for the Twins in 2019, spending the majority of the campaign with Triple-A Rochester.
In 330 plate appearances, he slashed .256/.289/.406 with 11 home runs, and 11 doubles.
Perhaps Torreyes will revive his MLB career in the City of Brotherly Love. He was often used off the bench for Girardi in 2016 and 2017 during which he compiled 505 plate appearances.
Girardi certainly got the most out of Torreyes' limited ceiling at the plate. During his three seasons in Pinstripes, the Venezuelan native hit .281/.311/.374 alongside 29 doubles, six triples, and 55 RBI.
