Rosell Herrera Should Absolutely Make Yankees Opening Day Roster as Beastly Spring Continues
By Sean Facey
The New York Yankees have dealt with a handful of troubling injuries at the outset of Spring Training. In addition to losing starters James Paxton and Luis Severino for extended periods of time, sluggers Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton are dealing with maladies of their own.
But the noise surrounding those injuries has covered up a quietly dominant spring from Rosell Herrera. The utilityman has absolutely raked through the first chunk of spring games, and at this point, the Yankees would be foolish not to give him a spot on the roster out of camp.
Through his first seven games of the spring, Herrera has accumulated nine hits in 16 at-bats, good for a .563 batting average. He has also managed a ridiculous .875 slugging percentage thanks to his four extra-base hits.
The 27-year-old has all the makings of another successful reclamation project for the Bronx Bombers.
Herrera has spent time with the Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals and Miami Marlins over the last two seasons, but he has yet to find his groove. He owns a paltry .602 OPS across 421 big-league plate appearances, despite showcasing defensive versatility and above-average speed.
But he finally seems to have fallen into a rhythm with the Yankees, and considering how much their depth is being tested already, it seems foolish not to reward with his unprecedented spring success with an Opening Day roster spot.
At worst, he'll serve as a placeholder while Judge and Stanton heal. At best, he can become yet another valuable depth piece to a team that learned to make its living off of the "Next Man Up" mentality last season.
