Royals Made Emotional and Correct Call Bringing Back Alex Gordon
By Scott Rogust
Five years after winning a World Series title, the Kansas City Royals are in the midst of a rebuild to craft their next dynasty. While they're in the business of grooming young prospects into everyday major league players, the Royals made an emotional decision on Wednesday.
KC brought back outfielder Alex Gordon on a one-year deal, and yes, it was the right move to make.
As is the case with any baseball team looking to rebuild, a roster of relative unknowns won't result in an influx of ticket sales or filled seats. That would've been the case if Gordon had not returned to Kauffman Stadium for the 2020 season, too; the community made it very clear they'd have a tough time stomaching his departure in an obvious numbers game.
Reports indicated that "Gordo" was mulling retirement early in the offseason, which would've been a sad decision to make, as Gordon had finally broken through the wall and put up highly respectable numbers in 2019.
Gordon recorded a .266 batting average, .345 on-base percentage, and .396 slugging percentage last year, his highest tallies since 2015, when the Royals won the World Series. Turned out, he had plenty left in the tank, and could've served another contender well...if he'd had any desire to go elsewhere, that is.
At 36 years old, Gordon has the opportunity to lead the influx of young players in Kansas City, while helping win games in the batter's box. Long story short, bringing back Gordon was absolutely the right decision by the Royals.
