Royals Sign Reunite With RHP Greg Holland on a Minor-League Deal
By Jack Murphy

The Kansas City Royals haven't been extremely active this offseason, but they've acquired some veterans who could be used as trade bait during the 2020 season in order to help further their rebuild. Another of such acquisitions was made on Tuesday.
Per Mark Feinsand, the Royals signed veteran reliever Greg Holland to a minor-league deal.
RHP Greg Holland and the Royals have agreed to a minor-league deal with an invite to big-league camp, per source. Holland pitched for KC from 2010-15, collecting 145 saves and helping the Royals to the 2015 World Series title.

Holland's deal includes an invitation to spring training. He will also make $1.25 million this year if he makes the big league roster, and could earn an additional $1.125 million in performance-based bonuses, per Jeffery Flanagan.

Holland, 34, spent his first six seasons in Kansas City, including four as the closer. He registered 145 saves during his tenure with the team, and will now have the opportunity to reunite with the club.
Holland signed with the Rockies prior to the 2017 season where, despite pitching at Coors Field, he had a great season, collecting a league-best 41 saves and being named an All-Star.

After 2017 however, Holland lost his touch as he posted a 7.92 ERA with the St. Louis Cardinals in the following season before being dealt to the Washington Nationals at the trade deadline. Holland fared just a bit better in 2019, as he finished the campaign with an ERA of 4.54.
Holland is looking to bounce back in 2020, and if he is able to do so he could represent an intriguing trade piece for contending teams looking to bolster their bullpen.
