3 Teams That Should Take a Flyer on Veteran Catcher Russell Martin
By Mark Powell
At 37 years of age, Russell Martin still thinks he has a little something left to give. With the catching market almost bare at this point, surely one of the 30 MLB teams will give him a chance. Martin is unlikely to be the same player he once was, but a veteran presence at catcher can do wonders for any pitching staff.
3. Pittsburgh Pirates
Martin is a known former Pirate, who hit one of the most memorable in recent franchise history. Jacob Stallings is the current Pittsburgh starting backstop, which is a downright embarrassment for the Bucs. Martin would arguably start right away, albeit in a platoon situation.
2. Tampa Bay Rays
Mike Zunino is nothing to write home about, and he's currently slotted to start at catcher for the Rays. Tampa is notoriously cheap, but as a potential playoff contender, they need better behind the plate. Martin would come cheap, and could even be an upgrade over Zunino.
1. Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox seem settled with Christian Vazquez behind the plate, which is fine. Yet, a cheap veteran behind Vazquez would do wonders for this somewhat lacking pitching staff. Martin wouldn't challenge Vazquez as the starter, but he would provide a nice alternative at times.
