This Russell Wilson-Saints Trade Seems Insane But Could Actually Happen
By Jerry Trotta
A stunning rumor from NBC analyst Chris Simms claimed that the Seattle Seahawks called the Cleveland Browns about a potential Russell Wilson trade prior to the 2018 NFL Draft. As ridiculous as that sounds, a follow-up report from Pro Football Talk states that Seattle dealing the 31-year-old stud is more feasible than some might think.
If the Seahawks decide to defy logic and the fundamental rules of football, expect the New Orleans Saints to be more than willing to acquire Wilson and his $35 million per year salary.
The Seahawks shopping Wilson, if they do, likely wouldn't transpire until next offseason at the earliest. That means that Drew Brees, who could retire after the 2020 campaign, won't be featured in any package between the two NFC powers.
We like to think that Seattle wouldn't unload the Pro Bowl quarterback without having a bridge or potentially long-term play at the position in the works. After all, its roster is built to win now and Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf form one of the best young wide receiver tandems in the league. Might as well get the most out of them while you can, right?
Enter Jameis Winston, who the Seahawks could deploy for a prove-it season or as a bridge QB for their predetermined heir apparent to Wilson. In addition to Winston, the Saints would need to pony up a horde of draft capital. Two first-round picks, two second-rounders and two-mid round selections will be required to land the Super Bowl champ.
It's far from a sure thing, but this deal would further extend New Orleans' championship window, and Seattle would be freed of Wilson's gargantuan contract. We thoroughly disagree with the prospect of trading a player of the Wisconsin product's caliber, but a package like this could satisfy all parties.
