VIDEO: Former All-Star Ryan Dempster Teaches Young Pitchers Drill They Can Do Indoors During Quarantine
By Will Coleman
Stuck in quarantine and longing for life with baseball again? Looking to improve your pitching mechanics while you practice social distancing? Don't worry, retired MLB hurler Ryan Dempster has you covered. The 42-year old hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2013, but that hasn't stopped the former All-Star from staying on top of his game. He had been posting videos to Twitter detailing different grips to use on the ball, and now, he's uploaded a walkthrough of one of his favorite throwing drills.
This technique might appear incredibly simple or even irrelevant to the game of baseball, but Dempster assures that enough practice "building that base" can help create the right foundation for a young pitcher. Of course, the best part is that you can do it throughout the day anywhere around the house.
Pitchers need enough strength in their legs and core to propel the ball past home plate over and over again without over-straining their shoulders and elbows, and that all starts by complimenting their mechanics with the right balance and weight transfer. If you want to add some variety and an obstacle to the drill, Dempster recommends practicing on a two-by-four.
Aside from the drill itself, Dempster also provides a lot of great advice and insight for pitchers at practically any level of the sport. All told, he doesn't look like he'd be such a bad pitching coach.
