Ryan Pace's Latest Comments on Drafting a QB Are More Bad News for Mitchell Trubisky
By Jerry Trotta
This offseason has been one to forget for Mitchell Trubisky, as the Chicago Bears are clearly considering their options with the 25-year-old quarterback.
First, the franchise completed a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars for gunslinger Nick Foles. General manager Ryan Pace later confirmed that there will be an open competition between the two signal callers for the starting job, but Foles certainly has more pedigree than Trubisky at this point, and is compensated at a far higher rate, too.

Now, with the NFL Draft just two days away, Pace offered up some telling comments on the Bears' potential selection of a quarterback at some point during the proceedings.
The fact that Pace is even considering it, with so many other roster holes, substantiates his lack of conviction in Trubisky, a player he traded up to draft No. 2 overall (ahead of both Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson) just three years ago. Of course, "highest guy on our board in a strong way" could refer to an unprecedented event, like a Tua drop into Chicago territory, but it sounds like he's more than willing to make an adjustment if a beloved QB falls into their laps in any round.
Trubisky conducted a Bears offense that finished 29th in the NFL in both points and yards per game in 2019. For the year, the UNC product completed less than 64% of his passes for 3,138 yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Chicago finished 8-7 in his 15 starts and missed out on the playoffs.
Those stats alone, along with a strange late-season benching saga, prove that this was a long time coming for Trubisky. All it took was Pace to swallow his pride and acknowledge that he made a ginormous mistake trading up to draft him in 2017.
