3 Moves That Will Help Get Saints Back to Super Bowl Contention
By Jackson Thompson
It's win now time in NOLA.
The New Orleans Saints just wrapped up their third-straight season of playoff heartbreak and will take a 41-year-old Drew Brees into the 2020 season, that is if he chooses not to retire. Their window is closing and the organization is running out of time to deliver with the greatest quarterback in its history.
The front office will have to make some moves this offseason if they want to capitalize on the twilight years of Brees' career, or move on from him entirely.
3. Sign Byron Jones
Poor cornerback play was involved in all three of the Saints recent playoff heartbreaks. It's a position that the Saints need to bolster to push their defense to a championship level, despite the presence of Marshon Lattimore. NOLA ranked 20th in all of football in passing yards allowed per-game and total passing yards allowed. The addition of Jones would greatly help that side of the ball.
2. Re-sign Taysom Hill
Hill nearly delivered a playoff victory himself against the Vikings with a monster game in the Wild Card round. He is one of the league's most unique players and brings a new dimension to the Saints' offense. He is set to become a restricted free agent this offseason, and the argument could be made that Hill needs the Saints just as much they need him. Sean Payton's offense is designed to incorporate Hill's diverse skill set. Should Brees retire, Hill could even take over as starter.
1. Draft Jerry Jeudy
The Saints owe their 41-year-old quarterback (should he return) a legitimate second wide receiver to play opposite Michael Thomas. Even if Brees does retire, opening up the passing game on both sides of the field is always a good idea. The Saints own the 24th pick in the first round, meaning they would likely need to pull off an aggressive trade to have a chance at Jeudy. Still, all options are on the table for this team.
