Saints Prove They're One Step Ahead of Rest of NFL Again and Bring Back Underrated DT David Onyemata
By Brendan Balsamo
David Onyemata has been steadily improving since his debut with the New Orleans Saints in 2016. He had struggled to find time in a starting role until 2019, when he received his chance to shine in 15 games.
The Saints see potential in the 27-year-old lineman, as the team and Onyemata have agreed to bring him back into the fold, and New Orleans fans should be thrilled.
In his first full season in a starting role, Onyemata totaled 22 solo tackles, 32 combined tackles, three sacks and three tackles for loss. His performance was about on par with his 2018 numbers due to his early-season suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
This looks to be a good move for the Saints, as after losing Alex Okafor and Tyeler Davison last offseason, it was imperative they keep their defensive line intact. This is the same team which has made a habit of out-thinking their competition, including drafting fellow defensive lineman Marcus Davenport earlier than anyone expected in 2018.
Hopefully, Onyemata can keep improving and aid the Saints in making one last playoff push in what could be Drew Brees' final year.
