Saints Cutting Larry Warford Makes More Sense Than You Think
By Jerry Trotta
The NFL is evolving and the growing trend is seeing teams target speed and elusiveness. In return, the league's 32 squads are being forced to adapt to the times, especially on the offensive line.
That's precisely what makes the New Orleans Saints cutting offensive guard Larry Warford on Friday more sensible than it was originally perceived. As good as the three-time Pro Bowler is, he's one of the most stagnant guards the league has to offer.
Assuming the Saints slot No. 24 overall pick Cesar Ruiz into the starting lineup, they'll now boast the second-fastest OL in the NFL.
That stat alone is priceless when you consider the immobility and fragility of Drew Brees, who turned 41 in January. Not only that, but the Saints saved millions in letting Warford go.
Placing this much conviction in a rookie is bold from New Orleans considering that the majority of offensive lineman take a year or two (sometimes more) to adjust to the speed of the NFL. However, Ruiz's versatility suggests that he'll make a seamless transition. What the Michigan product will lack in experience, he'll make up for in agility.
That was enough to convince the Saints that axing Warford, which will save them close to $8 million, was the right move.
We're not so sure that fans in New Orleans have come around to the surprising transaction just yet, but there's definitely a method to the Saints' madness, and, more often than not, Sean Payton and Co. get it right.
