Comparing Jameis Winston's 2020 Salary to Other Backup Quarterbacks is Actually Pretty Sad
By Brady Williams

After being ousted by NFL legend Tom Brady, Jameis Winston finally found a home outside of Tampa Bay. However, that won't stop fans from hurling criticism at the new backup quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. The 2019 leader in passing yards is going to make only $1.1 million in 2020, which is a W for the Saints to eat and pitiful for Winston.
His tiny contract places him behind a list of perennial backups and career underachievers that's pretty upsetting to read.
Jameis makes $1.1M this yr & slots at QB #52.

He makes less than these backups:
CJ Beathard
DeShone Kizer
Chad Henne
Jeff Driskel
Ryan Griffin
Chase Daniel
Nate Sudfeld
Matt Barkley
Nathan Peterman
Cooper Rush
Colt McCoy
Matt Schaub
RGIII
Case Keenum
AJ McCarron
Marcus Mariota
Winston threw the second-most touchdowns in the NFL last season, and now he's making less than Nathan Peterman, who has only three passing touchdowns (and 12 interceptions) in his career. Granted, Winston had a staggering 30 interceptions in 2019, but his production when he actually throws to his receivers should earn him more credit than the likes of Matt Schaub, who's only played in 15 games since Winston entered the league. Winston's even getting paid less than A.J. McCarron. That guy hasn't thrown a touchdown since 2015.
The veteran's interception issues seem to be a much bigger concern for teams than one might have previously thought. Either that, or he needs to fire his agent. But who knows, maybe his recent Lasik surgery will turn things around for him if he manages to get some playing time in 2020.
Jameis Winston on Zoom call with Saints media, about Lasik surgery, said he can now read license plates and street signs that he couldn't read as well before. Helps with blurriness, depth perception, clearer vision.

Winston's constant interceptions cost the Buccaneers a number of games, but, as a backup, 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns easily make him the best No. 2 QB in the NFL. The fact that he's making less than a litany of failed quarterbacks and might even be the third option after Taysom Hill if things go south is just so sad.
