Jameis Winston Contract Details With Saints Further Prove Bill Belichick Believes in Jarrett Stidham
By Mark Powell
Jameis Winston is a New Orleans Saint, taking the road well-travelled by Teddy Bridgewater before him, who took a backup role behind Drew Brees and parlayed it into a rich contract with the Carolina Panthers this offseason.
Learning behind a future Hall of Famer has its perks, perhaps even more for the Saints, who signed a talented former No. 1 overall pick as insurance behind their 41-year-old signal caller.
Nonetheless, the Saints weren't the only team in on Jameis from the jump. But, despite their need for a quarterback (from the outside looking in), Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots were happy to let Sean Payton have this one.
That is a steal.
The Patriots didn't select a quarterback in the NFL Draft, let Winston sign cheap in the Bayou and have yet to show any real interest in Cam Newton. Belichick's plan is clear as day, even if pundits have been ignoring it for months -- the Patriots are riding with Jarrett Stidham.
While Pats fans are right to question the intentions of the franchise in 2020, if anyone's earned the right to see things out with a late-round quarterback in a year of transition, it's Belichick.
Hell, how would NFL Twitter have reacted to Belichick sticking with Brady in 2001 over proven quarterback Drew Bledsoe? There would've been a ton of Freezing Cold Takes.
Stidham is far from proven, but he's done enough in practice to intrigue Belichick enough to turn down some legitimate veteran quarterbacks.
That should be enough for Patriot fans who so often tout his go-to motto. The man is doing his job.
