Legendary Saints Kicker Tom Dempsey Tests Positive for Coronavirus
By Scott Rogust
For the past month, we've seen news trickle in of professional sports personalities contracting the coronavirus during this ongoing pandemic, and though it's difficult, we cannot allow ourselves to be desensitized to it. Unfortunately, we have to add yet another distinguished individual to the list.
Legendary New Orleans Saints kicker Tom Dempsey tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday after an outbreak struck the senior living center where he lives.
Dempsey, 73, is currently battling Alzheimer's disease and dementia. His daughter Ashley revealed that Dempsey began displaying symptoms of the coronavirus via respiratory issues. The legendary kicker got tested at the Tulane University Medical Center, where they deemed his oxygen levels were good, and sent him back to his assisted living home.
Even with the positive test, Dempsey's symptoms were mild, and nurses were able to control his fever with Tylenol.
Lambeth House, the senior living center, had 50 cases of COVID-19 spanning the past month, and 13 individuals have unfortunately passed away.
Dempsey is an all-time great for the Saints organization. In his two years with the organization, the kicker successfully converted 40-of-75 field goal attempts. His greatest kick came in 1970, where he nailed a record-breaking 63-yard kick to give the Saints a 19-17 win over the Detroit Lions. That record would stand until 2013, where Matt Prater broke it, albeit in high altitude.
Here's hoping that Dempsey can pull through and defeat this virus. Make no mistake, all of Who Dat Nation has his back during this fight.
