Saints Pro Bowl Guard Andrus Peat Suffered Broken Arm in Loss to Falcons
By Mark Powell
The New Orleans Saints suffered a surprising letdown against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday afternoon, but that wasn't the only loss for this NFC contender.
Andrus Peat, a Pro Bowl guard for the Saints, will miss an extended period of time after breaking his arm while trying to protect Drew Brees.
Peat isn't a household name to most NFL fans, but he's established himself as one of the best guards in the NFC since his arrival in Nola in 2012 out of Stanford. The 26-year-old has been reliable each of the past three seasons, playing in no less than 13 games.
The Saints schedule heats up the next few weeks, with back-to-back matchups against division foes Carolina and Atlanta before playing the San Francisco 49ers and Indianapolis Colts. The 49ers and Falcons, in particular, possess pass rushes which are a threat to the 40-year-old.
The one factor in the Saints' favor is their NFC South lead, which, even after a loss to the Falcons on Sunday, is still two games, and by taking care of business against the Panthers in a few weeks can pretty much cement their status as the top dogs in that division.
Peat's absence, however, poses more of a threat as a long-term issue in terms of protecting Brees.
