Sean Payton Reveals Ball-Spotting Technology is on the Way for NFL Refs
By Jerry Trotta
How many times during the NFL season do we see officials completely botch the spot of the ball? Whether they screw a team out of an obvious first down or inexcusably gift someone an extra yard or two down the stretch, there's simply no compatibility.
In some cases, the zebras will even permit players in a hurry-up offense to spot the ball and not think twice if it was precise or not.
Well, football junkies who find that headache as a pet peeve can rejoice, because New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, who is a member of the league's Competition Committee, revealed that ball-spotting technology isn't far from being instilled by the league.
"(Technology) is coming, it’s coming," said Payton while speaking with Peter King of Football Morning in America. "It should be here now."
The 56-year-old HC continued to say that he expects to see something like "the ball crossing the plane of the goal line, and the uprights flashing yellow, just like the shot clock in the NBA. And then you can see where the knee is, and decide whether it’s a score or not.”
There haven't been many reports indicating that this sort of technology is in the works, but Payton, given his position on the Competition Committee, is as good of a source as any.
We can only hope that this new ball-spotting operation is instilled by next season. The sheer guesswork that's required with the current formula is simply untenable and needs to be amended.
