Sean Payton Roasts USA Today Over Column Criticizing Team for Drafting From Local Brewery
By Will Coleman
The 2020 NFL Draft kicks off with first-round coverage three weeks from Thursday, and we couldn't be more excited. The draft won't take place in Las Vegas as anticipated and the kinks of its virtual happening have yet to be worked out, but at least we have something in the sports world to look forward to.
One to-be-determined detail of the draft we're waiting to hear on is if and how team personnel will be able to gather in their respective draft war rooms. For the New Orleans Saints, head coach Sean Payton announced that they will draft from the local Dixie Brewing Company. With bars across the country indefinitely closed off to the public due to the coronavirus outbreak, a USA Today scribe took this decision the wrong way in a column and Payton was quick to fire back on Twitter.
Columnist Nancy Armour had an opinion piece published Wednesday in response to the team's decision, and Payton probably made her regret that. Armour referred to the idea as "dumb and dangerous," while Payton called her out for a lack of credibility.
This was a pretty savage move by Payton, especially considering he put the validity of Armour's facts on blast. We don't know exactly what Payton is referring to in terms of the veracity of her statements, but it's clear he feels she said a number of wrong things.
Armour hasn't replied to Payton on Twitter and her piece is still available on USA Today's website.
Nonetheless, as front offices around the league start to figure out their plans for April 23, Payton and the Saints could be trend-setters for this unusual edition of the NFL Draft. We'll hopefully see more when the plan is in action.
