Saints Should Ditch Taysom Hill and Draft Jalen Hurts
Taysom Hill has every right to want to play quarterback, exclusively, in the modern NFL. However, his timeline doesn't match up to that of the New Orleans Saints. This is as simple as it gets.
Hill is 29 years old. The odds the Saints develop him into a reliable NFL starting quarterback, at this point in his career, are frankly not great. Perhaps another NFL team will feel differently, but it's a strange point in Hill's career to claim he's tired of what he does best -- being unpredictable on the gridiron.
New Orleans still has Drew Brees, Taysom. Should they wish to move on from Brees and start over with a near-30 QB, they'd be better suited with Teddy Bridgewater. But as Brees debates his future, Hill is taking himself out of the running as his heir-apparent.
The Saints' best option is to start from scratch behind a veteran signal-caller, whether that be Brees or Bridgewater. In the same vain as Hill, New Orleans could draft Jalen Hurts in the middle rounds and develop the former Alabama and Oklahoma signal-caller into a capable long-term option.
In the meantime, Hurts seems more than capable at replacing Hill as a trick play artist. Hurts doesn't bring that same level of physicality and the ability to play receiver, but he can keep opposing defenses honest with his elusiveness. That's what the Saints would need in the interim.
Point and case, Hill needs the Saints more than New Orleans relies on a gadget player. Hurts, at the very least, would replace some of attributes Hill is best at. He also has the potential to develop into a capable long-term option at quarterback, and he's eight years younger than Hill.
