Saints Should Name Michael Thomas and Malcolm Jenkins Captains and Official Spokesmen for 2020 Season

The New Orleans Saints have managed to put a hectic week behind them, and players like wide receiver Michael Thomas stepping up and placating the fanbase is a big reason why.

Thomas was one of the first Saints to bury the hatchet with quarterback Drew Brees after the latter's controversial comments about protesting, and he's gone above and beyond in the aftermath of the incident to stitch things back together.

This is what captains do. There is no reason that Thomas and safety Malcolm Jenkins, the leaders of the pack in the response, shouldn't be captains for the 2020 season and beyond.

Beyond their exceptional play on the field, it's become crystal clear that those two have voices that truly carry in the New Orleans locker room every bit as loudly as Brees' voice. If they can dig their way out of this one while keeping the locker room together, that deserves a captain's badge.

Brees might be a future Hall of Famer and the guy who drives this bus, but he is clearly not the guy who will lead this team in the future due to his age, and his divisive comments might have accidentally expedited his retirement. In Thomas and Jenkins, the Saints found two leaders who were able to not only make their thoughts on Brees and the current social climate explicitly clear, but also galvanized the team after a rough couple of days.
