We all know that New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is badly itching to get back on the field, but head coach Sean Payton needs to exercise caution.
Teddy Bridgewater has improbably led the Saints to a 5-0 record since being the starter and there's no reason to risk bringing Brees back early from his thumb injury. He should absolutely rest as long as possible after undergoing surgery.
And since the Saints face the Arizona Cardinals next in New Orleans and then have a bye, Brees should be sitting pretty on the sidelines for the next two weeks before they face the Falcons.
Saints’ QB Drew Brees said he plans to return to practice this week and hopes to be able to play as early as Sunday's Week 8 home game against the Arizona Cardinals. If he’s not back Sunday, the Saints have a bye before a home game vs. Atlanta.https://t.co/mLSzGrXd0m

This team just put up 36 points on the road against one of the best defenses in the NFL without their starting quarterback, running back and tight end. Brees can push himself all he wants, but it's bad business to put him out there against a mediocre-at-best Cardinals team.
Let Teddy get one more start in front of the cozy New Orleans crowd, secure another win, and then bring Brees back on Nov. 10 at the earliest.
Without Drew Brees, Alvin Kamara and Jared Cook, the Saints have hung 36 points & 419 yards on the NFL's 6th-ranked defense.

Somebody give a game ball to Sean Payton and the entire Saints coaching staff.
After all, isn't it kind of fun being a spectator and watching your team win, Drew?

Brees certainly elevates this Saints offense to one of the best in history, but Sean Payton carries the blueprint. The head coach has survived without Brees, and he'll likely continue doing so, which is a luxury because many teams cannot afford to be without their QB1.
