Saquon Barkley's Pick for Best Rookie Running Back Will Make Giants Fans Mad
By Sean Facey
New York Giants star Saquon Barkley set the league on fire last year. He amassed over 2,000 yards from scrimmage and earned himself Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
Considering his accomplishments, it only makes sense to ask him which rookie running back he thinks will have the best season in 2019. Unfortunately, his answer will ruffle some feathers among the Giants faithful.
Barkley tabbed Philadelphia Eagles second-round pick and fellow Penn State product Miles Sanders as his pick for this year's best first-year man out of the backfield.
Sticking up for your former college teammate makes sense in so many ways, but the Eagles and Giants are bitter rivals who play each other (at least) twice per year. There's nothing wrong with giving credit where credit is due, but when you're talking about a player on a rival team, some restraint is in order.
Barkley wasn't shy in his support, though. He openly gushed about the former teammate he'll be playing against in a matter of months.
"To be the second running back taken in the draft — and in my opinion, the best running back in the draft — [Saunders is] going to prove that to the league this year. I’m really excited for him," he said.
Maybe Barkley is playing mind games here and trying to place high expectations on Sanders, and all the extra pressure that comes with them.
Regardless, Giants fans probably aren't too happy to see their best player heaping praise on a hated foe.
