Saquon Barkley's Postgame Comments After Loss to Eagles Clearly Take Shot at Giants' Identity
The New York Giants were cruising Monday night. The team took a 17-3 lead into halftime and the Philadelphia Eagles were approaching one of the worst losses in recent team history.
But then the inevitable happened: the Giants fell apart in the second half, losing in overtime after the defense gave up an easy touchdown to Zach Ertz.
Saquon Barkley rushed for 66 yards and once again gave it all he had. His team is just not good enough and the 2-11 record shows that. His strong words after the game showed his true feelings about the team's effort and identity this season.
That is not a good sign for head coach Pat Shurmur. It should also be a bad sign for general manager Dave Gettleman, but the man seems to have nine lives.
Barkley isn't wrong. The Giants have five one-score losses this season, and if three of those went the other way then the team is in contention for the NFC East division crown right now.
Barkley talks about the team being inconsistent. That is true, but the problems begin with Shurmur and Gettleman. The coach has shown no ability to motivate in his career as a head coach with the Browns and now most recently the Giants.
Then there's Gettleman, whose pick of Daniel Jones at No. 6 overall was enough to cause some Giants fans to swear off the team. This came after the team took Barkley at No. 2 overall the year prior, a time in which much more needed talent was available for the team's depleted roster.
Barkley is one of the best running backs in the league, but that position is not one where one guy can turn around a dysfunctional team. Barkley seems to have come to that realization and he's clearly not happy with the state of the G-Men.
