Scott Boras Blames MLB for Kris Bryant's Ankle Injury
By Parker White
Despite being swept at home by the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend, the Chicago Cubs still have a slim chance of making the postseason. However, they'll have to fight the passage of time without star third baseman Kris Bryant, who injured his ankle after slipping on a wet bag.
As you can imagine, his agent Scott Boras isn't happy.
"What have they done since Harper [slipped on first base]? The answer is nothing," Boras told the Sun-Times. "They're focused on other factors, economic factors, all things relating to how they can administer the game, and yet the safety of players and resolution of this issue has gone without any attention.
"The integrity of our game is going to [be] damaged when the safety of players is not at the forefront, and Major League Baseball has dropped the ball on the wet bag subject," he continued.
Bryant suffered a Grade 2 ankle sprain, not a fracture, as a result of slipping on the wet first base bag after busting it down the line to break up a double play. While you can't take injury out of any sport, this appears to have been avoidable if the league had taken strides to keep their standard-issue bags from getting so slippery.
It's amazing, but Boras isn't totally wrong to be outraged.
Of course, you wonder what MLB can do here. Have every base completely submerged in the ground like home plate? Maybe that's the answer, but the league has to act in a way that doesn't put player safety at risk. There's no question something needs to be done in this area. We can't have star players in the final weeks of the season injuring themselves because of a wet bag.
