Seahawks Absolutely Cannot Let Cardinals Sign Everson Griffen
By Scott Rogust
We're two months into the 2020 league year, and the Seattle Seahawks have yet to add a quality pass rusher to their defensive line. With Jadeveon Clowney basically off their wish list, they've had talks with former Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Everson Griffen over the past month, but never finalized anything.
Now, they're in danger of not only missing out on Griffen, but losing him to the NFC West rival Arizona Cardinals.
The Cardinals are eyeing Griffen to help alleviate the pressure off linebacker Chandler Jones and create a dominant pass rushing duo. Arizona is on the rise, as evidenced by their trade for receiver DeAndre Hopkins and first-round selection of linebacker/safety hybrid Isaiah Simmons, so we can't blame them for wanting to add Griffen to put them over the edge.
In his ten-year career, Griffen has tallied 355 tackles, 176 quarterback hits, and 74.5 sacks.
Griffen signing with the Cardinals is the worst-case scenario for the Seahawks. Not only would they lose out on the best pass rusher on the market, but their rather lackluster offensive line will have to deal with Griffen twice a season. We get quarterback Russell Wilson has the ability to escape oncoming pressure, but does Seattle really want to subject him to that much punishment?
To make matters worse, they spent valuable cap space on running back Carlos Hyde. Seahawks general manager John Schneider better be restructuring contracts right now to facilitate a deal with Griffen. Do it now, before you allow him to reach the desert.
