3 Moves That Will Get Seahawks Back to Super Bowl Contention
By Scott Rogust
The Seattle Seahawks, despite being the fifth seed in the NFC, had the chance to make plenty of noise in the playoffs. They rolled over the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round, but lost to the Green Bay Packers in a tightly-contested Divisional matchup.
Seattle is so close to returning to the Super Bowl, and making these three moves can help them with that.
3. Sign Byron Jones
If the playoffs showed one thing, it's that the Seahawks are in desperate need of a playmaker in the secondary. Aaron Rodgers exploited the defensive backs via Davante Adams in the Divisional Round. The Seahawks have nearly the cap space, and they should use some of that money towards Dallas Cowboys cornerback Byron Jones. With Dallas having to pay Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper this offseason, Jones is the most likely to sign elsewhere. The Seahawks should be the most aggressive pursuers for Jones' services.
2. Select OT Mekhi Becton in First Round
Seattle's offensive line presented itself as an issue for the past couple of seasons. Now, with Germain Ifedi, George Fant, and Mike Iupati hitting free agency, the Seahawks should explore help in the NFL Draft. Top offensive linemen like Andrew Thomas, Jedrick Wills, and Tristan Wirfs are all expected to be off the board once the Seahawks are on the clock with the No. 25 pick. Luckily for them, Louisville tackle Mekhi Becton could be available. Becton can be an option at right tackle and could shift over to the left side of the line to replace 35-year-old Duane Brown. His college tape shows he's an absolute mauler at the line of scrimmage. If Becton is available, the Seahawks should be running to the podium to select him.
1. Retain Jadeveon Clowney
The Seahawks made a huge splash this past summer by acquiring defensive end Jadeveon Clowney from the Houston Texans for dimes on the dollar. While Clowney didn't light up the stat sheet, you have to consider he was hindered by a core muscle injury that limited him to 13 games. Additionally, he was learning a new playbook. Throughout his career, Clowney has shown the ability to be a nine-sack edge rusher and had flashes in his debut season in Seattle. The Seahawks must retain Clowney if they want to contend for Super Bowl LV next year.
