On Friday, the Seattle Seahawks got a head start on their roster cuts by announcing the release of quarterback Paxton Lynch. With that news, many assumed that Geno Smith had won the backup job behind Russell Wilson.

Yeah, about that.

Hours after the 4:00 p.m. roster cut deadline, the Seahawks revealed they cut Smith as well, leaving Wilson as the only signal caller on the active roster.

Who needs a backup quarterback anyway?

In all seriousness, there has to be an ulterior motive for Seattle. With hundreds of players on the open market, it's quite possible that the Seahawks have their eyes on a quarterback (Kyle Lauletta? Kyle Sloter?) who was forced to hand in their playbook by their ex-head coach.

Or, it could just be roster maneuvering by the Seahawks, who, earlier in the day, acquired former Houston Texans pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney. At the very least, Smith may be re-signed in the next 24 hours.

Who knows what the plan is, but as of this writing, the Seattle Seahawks have one quarterback on their depth chart in Russell Wilson.
