Seahawks' Reported Offer to Devonta Freeman Pours Cold Water on Marshawn Lynch Reunion Rumors
By Scott Rogust
Just two weeks ago, It seemed like the Seattle Seahawks were destined to reunite with Marshawn Lynch for the 2020 season. Those plans now appear to be in at least some question.
According to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio, the Seahawks have extended an offer to former Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman. However, the free agent has told general manager John Schneider that he wants more money than what they're currently offering.
Are Beast Quakes coming back to the Pacific Northwest or not? The suspense is killing us.
The Seahawks are in a bit of a bind at the running back position. In the latter portion of last season, the team lost second-year rusher Rashaad Penny to a torn ACL, and Schneider himself said "it's going to be really hard" for him to be ready for the start of the season, per Pro Football Talk.
With that news on Penny, that leaves Chris Carson and Travis Homer as the only experienced running backs on the roster. While that's not the worst thing in the world when Russell Wilson is your quarterback, the Hawks thrive off a fluid and diverse rushing attack.
As for Lynch, it appears he's on the outside looking in due to his age and the mileage on his tires. Lynch is 34, while Freeman is 28. Freeman has lost some of his trademark explosiveness due to a knee injury suffered during the 2018 season, however, which was evident this past season as he rushed for just 656 yards and two touchdowns on 184 carries.
Perhaps a change of scenery and a running back committee could do wonders for him.
The Seahawks have approximately $16.1 million in cap space following the release of offensive linemen DJ Fluker and Justin Britt. That leaves them plenty of wiggle room to work out a deal with Freeman if a Beast Mode reunion isn't mean to be.
