3 Seahawks Players Seattle Won't Be Able to Keep Unless Russell Wilson Restructures His Contract

When Russell Wilson confirmed that he signed a new contract with Seattle via video message in bed with his wife Ciara, most Seahawks fans were justifiably enthused. While Wilson is still playing at an elite level, he earns more money than any player in the league, which could make it hard for the Seahawks to retain a lot of their star players. These secondary and tertiary stars could leave Seattle if Wilson's contract prevents John Schneider from signing them to longer deals.

3. RB Chris Carson

Carson has ran for over 1,100 yards in consecutive seasons, but the Seahawks have to grapple with the fact that he has some well-documented fumble issues. Even with all of those warts, Carson is a powerful, explosive runner that a run-heavy offense likes to lean on. Seattle might have to start over at the position if Wilson's deal prevents them from bringing him back.

2. CB Shaquill Griffin

Griffin and his brother Shaquem have been solid contributors on defense over the last two years, with Shaquill making a Pro Bowl for his work on the outside in Ken Norton's defense. Seattle's near-dynasty was built on their secondary, and Pete Carroll understands what can come from keeping your best defensive backs happy and taken care of. Wilson better get some of his money converted into a bonus so Griffin can stick around.

1. WR DK Metcalf

A 6-4, 230 receiver built like a horse with the speed of a cheetah really fell in the draft because he ran around some cones slow. Seattle made fools of the rest of the league when they got over 1,000 yards out of DK Metcalf in the regular season and playoffs combined. Wilson was at his best when he had a reliable downfield threat like Doug Baldwin lining up outside, and Metcalf has the potential to be MUCH better than him. The Seahawks need to do anything and everything to get him signed (in due time), even if it means fiddling with Wilson's deal.
