This Seahawks-Redskins Trade Involving Trent Williams Could Actually Work
By Scott Rogust
It's not a matter of "if" anymore. It's a matter of when the Washington Redskins part ways with stud left tackle Trent Williams. After a botched medical evaluation, Williams expressed his desire for an exit from DC, but the team was apprehensive in doing so. Washington's front office even turned down first-round picks from a multitude of teams last year.
Now, the team has lost all leverage, as Williams bashed the organization through his agent again on Tuesday, and the 31-year-old wants a new contract worth around $20 million a year. So much for the premium return, Washington.
In the wake of this news, the Seattle Seahawks should be all over a trade for Williams. If you watched a Seahawks game in recent seasons, the first thing you likely noticed was quarterback Russell Wilson running for his life. Yes, he's mobile and can escape a pass rush, but you can't do that to your franchise signal caller. He needs protection at the line of scrimmage.
So, what would it take for the Seahawks to secure Williams' services? Seattle has $18 million in cap space and Williams carries a $14.5 million cap charge in 2020. To fit in his 2020 salary and his impending new contract, the Seahawks should send their sixth-round pick this year (pick No. 214) and left tackle Duane Brown to Washington.
Brown is 34 years old, has dealt with nagging injuries in recent years, and carries a $12.6 million cap hit. But when Brown's on the field, he's a quality left tackle in the NFL, which would be a pretty good consolation prize for Washington.
In conclusion, Seattle gets Williams, and Washington gets Brown and a 2020 sixth-round selection. That's a win-win trade.
