Seahawks Release Veteran DB and Super Bowl Champ DeShawn Shead

DeShawn Shead was hoping to latch back on with his former team for the 2019 season, but it seems that the organization has shut the door on him.

Shead was competing for a roster spot with the Seattle Seahawks, but didn't survive the 53-man roster cuts, as the team opted to release the 30-year-old cornerback.

ESPN sources: the Seahawks have released veteran defensive back DeShawn Shead. He'd been playing safety this summer and got a long look last night at cornerback, where he started in 2015-16 for Seattle. A locker-room favorite and a member of the Seahawks' Super Bowl XLVIII team.

Shead spent the first six seasons of his NFL career in Seattle. The undrafted rookie joined the Seahawks in 2012 out of Portland State, winning a ring with the team in 2013.

His best season in Seattle came in 2016, during which he started 15 games and recorded 80 tackles, 14 pass defenses, an interception and a forced fumble. He unfortunately underwent ACL surgery in January of 2017, and hasn't been the same since.

Shead was with the Detroit Lions in 2018, after being cut by the Seahawks, though he only logged one start, appearing in 12 total games. He recorded 18 tackles and forced a fumble in his limited game time.

Shead thanked the organization on Twitter with a heartfelt post and a special shoutout to the 12th man.

While it's possible the veteran can find a new NFL home, his cut from Seattle will likely sting a bit, considering it's where he's played the majority of his career.
