Seahawks Release WR Jaron Brown to Clear Cap Space for Jadeveon Clowney
By Sean Facey
Just because the Seahawks' acquisition of Jadeveon Clowney was an absolute heist doesn't mean that they didn't have to make some tough moves to bring him in.
To clear cap space for the incoming defensive star, Seattle has released wide receiver Jaron Brown.
A six-year NFL veteran, Brown spent his first five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals before joining the Seahawks last year. He appeared in all 16 games for Seattle, but he wasn't much of a factor, totaling just 166 receiving yards on 14 receptions. He did, however, manage five touchdowns.
By cutting him, the Seahawks will clear up $2.75 million in cap space, thus allowing them to accommodate Clowney's tag salary.
Brown became expendable following the draft. Seattle used three of their draft picks this year on wide receivers alone, including one of the biggest stars to come out of the NFL combine in DK Metcalf.
Though Brown provided a veteran presence for the Seahawks, his value pales in comparison to that of Clowney. He'll also no doubt get a chance to play on another team looking for a veteran at wide receiver.
It's shaping up to be one interesting year for Pete Carroll and his Seahawks, but it's a season that Brown won't be a part of.
