Seahawks Sign DT Earl Mitchell as Replacement for Suspended Jarron Reed

The Seattle Seahawks wasted no time finding a replacement for defensive lineman Jarran Reed after his suspension on Tuesday. With Reed set to miss six games due to domestic violence allegations from 2017, the Seahawks hit the free agency market to find a serviceable stand-in.

Seattle reportedly signed defensive tackle Earl Mitchell, an aging veteran who's been underwhelming in recent years along the San Francisco 49ers defensive line.

Seattle had been a strong suitor for Mitchell when he was a free agent in 2017, but he was ultimately signed by the 49ers on a four-year deal. After two disappointing seasons in red and gold, San Francisco declined to pick up his team option this offseason.

Mitchell is entering his age-32 season, and while he doesn't come with gaudy statistics, he should be a solid locker room presence and he's better than some of the options that were already on the Seahawks' roster.

Still, many fans are likely disappointed with the signing after the younger and more talented DT in Mike Daniels was surprisingly released by the Packers Wednesday and became available on the open market.

When Jarran Reed returns, Mitchell will likely become expendable, but could find a way to stay on the roster in a rotational role.
