Seahawks TE Ed Dickson to Miss Just Over a Month Following Knee Surgery
By Michael Luciano
In Brian Schottenheimer's offense, tight ends who can run block are always going to be highly valued. Unfortunately for Schottenheimer and Seattle, they might head into the season without one of the best blocking tight ends in the league.
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said that veteran tight end Ed Dickson will miss around 4-to-5 weeks after knee surgery, putting his availability for the 2019 season opener in doubt.
Selected in the third round (No. 70 overall) in the 2010 draft out of Oregon, Dickson has caught 190 passes for 2,128 yards and 15 touchdowns in his career. Most of those numbers came during his four-year stints as a Baltimore Raven and a Carolina Panther, the latter of whom he appeared in a Super Bowl with.
With Dickson hurt, second-year tight end Will Dissly will likely assume the backup role behind starter Nick Vannett.
The Seahawks have used a lot of draft capital on tight end depth over the last few years in Vannett and Dissly, so this loss isn't as crippling as it might be on some other teams. However, losing a veteran like Dickson is going to sting, provided he doesn't heal up in time for Week 1.
