The Seahawks Are the Perfect Landing Spot for Timmy Jernigan
By Jerry Trotta
Some surprising news surfaced on Tuesday regarding the NFL future of defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan. The former Philadelphia Eagle took to Instagram to assert that he will not be playing for the Houston Texans, with whom he agreed to a one-year contract this offseason, in 2020.
With the free agency field all but dried up, this development opens the door for teams to fill a need up front, and the Seattle Seahawks come to mind as the perfect landing spot.
Jernigan obviously isn't a like-for-like replacement for Jadeveon Clowney -- they don't even play the same position -- but deploying both him and Jarran Reed inside will give Seattle a sneaky good front seven. The former second-round pick's statistics won't jump off the screen, but there aren't many DT's in the NFL that post world-beating numbers year in and year out.
Being a part of the Eagles' loaded defensive line hasn't helped Jernigan's case either. Just look at the numbers he registered with Baltimore from 2014-2016. During that span, the Florida State product logged 91 tackles, 13 sacks and 35 QB hits. If he stays healthy, we fully believe that Jernigan can replicate the success he enjoyed with the Ravens in Seattle.
The 27-year-old was slated to pocket $3.75 million with the Texans, so Seattle won't have to break the bank to bring him to the Emerald City. With the franchise possessing $13.78 million in cap space, there's really no excuse for general manager John Schneider not to pursue Jernigan.
