3 Seahawks Veterans Fighting for Their Jobs After the Draft

The Seattle Seahawks followed a familiar pattern in the 2020 NFL Draft, as they once again made a bit of an unusual first-round pick and followed that up by adding toolsy prospects at positions of strength.

Pete Carroll's veteran team received a youthful shot in the arm over the weekend, and that could force these three players out of their starting jobs and into backup roles.

3. EDGE Bruce Irvin

Irvin had his best days with the Seahawks as a youngster out of West Virginia, but he shouldn't count on matching that production in 2020. Seattle took two edge rushers in Tennessee's Darrell Taylor and Syracuse's Alton Robinson, all the while picking up enough cap space to still make a run at Jadeveon Clowney. Irvin shouldn't expect any game time handed to him this season.

2. TE Greg Olsen

Just like Irvin, Olsen shouldn't expect any playing time to be handed to him in 2019. Olsen had enough competition for the TE1 job thanks to Will Dissly and Jacob Hollister, and John Schneider went out and found two more players for him to compete with in the draft, as he picked up Stanford's Colby Parkinson in the fourth round and LSU's Stephan Sullivan in the seventh round. Olsen's injury history and the fact he just turned 35 are all major factors working against him.

1. LB KJ Wright

Wright has been a cornerstone of the Seahawks defense for the last decade, but Schneider seems to be planning for the post-Wright era now that the former Mississippi State linebacker is slated for free agency after this season. The selection of Texas Tech's Jordyn Brooks in the first round this year and Utah's Cody Barton in the third round last year prove that Seattle isn't expecting him back next year. They could just cut bait with him a year early and give Brooks a starting role if they so choose.
