Sonny Gray Has Arthroscopic Surgery on Elbow After Final Start of Season
By Ryan Giglio
Bouncing back from a rough tenure in the Bronx, Sonny Gray was one of the best starting pitchers in baseball in 2019, after taking his talents to Cincinnati.
However, there is some potential cause for concern as it was announced that Gray underwent arthroscopic surgery in his right elbow on Wednesday.
The surgery was minor, intended to clean out some loose parts in the elbow, and is not expected to effect Gray's offseason work.
Nevertheless, the news is somewhat surprising since Gray showed no signs of any injury throughout the year. The 29-year-old pitched five innings and allowed three runs on three hits while recording six strikeouts against the Brewers on Tuesday.
Gray turned himself from a struggling Yankee in 2018 (4.90 ERA, 1.496 WHIP) to a Cy Young candidate this season. In 31 starts, he went 11-8 with a 2.87 ERA in 175 innings and 205 strikeouts. Talk about a bounce back year.
The Reds traded for Gray this offseason and immediately signed him to a three-year, $30 million extension. Though it was questioned at the time, the deal looks like it may pay great dividends fro Cincinnati, especially if he comes back equally as solid in 2020.
